What to See at Møns Klint in Denmark

Møns Klint is perhaps the biggest reason why people travel to the small island of Møn in Denmark. In fact, more than 200,000 people visit this breathtaking cliff each year. Møns Klint is also on UNESCO’s list of World Hertiage Sites within a natural area making it a MUST SEE destination in Denmark. Getting to Møns Klint

The best way to get to Møns Klint is by car. If you travel from Copenhagen to Møns Klint, you can take E47 to Vordingborg and switch to Route 59. Once you are on the island of Møn, you will take Route 287 to Møns Klint. The island of Møn is quite small. It is only 25.5 kilometers to get to Møns Klint once you cross the bridge from the island of Sjælland.

Some people may also travel by the 667 bus from Stege to Møns Klint. Times vary, so it may be a good idea to plan that trip in advance.

If cycling is something you are interested in doing, but still want to drive to Møn, you are in luck. There are plenty of cycle paths within the Møns Klint area. You will surely have enough opportunity to use your bike there.

Where to Stay on Møn

Though we stayed closer to Stevns Klint when we visited Møns Klint, we noticed that there were quite a few options for places to stay on Møn. Many of the places to stay on Møn are farms or B and Bs. It is possible to camp at Møns Klint at a shelter site or a primitive campsite. This can only be done with a permit, so you will need to plan ahead if this is what you would like to do. If you have questions on how to do this, contact the Danish Nature Agency or the GeoCenter at Møns Klint.

Parking at Møns Klint

When you get close to Møns Klint, you may notice that you drive through a large, forested area. This is called Klinteskoven. There are many parking places throughout the forest for those looking to try all of the many paths for cycling and walking. However, when my family and I visited Møns Klint, we parked at the parking lot closest to the GeoCenter. This is the best parking area to use if you want to see the GeoCenter and the main views of the cliffs.

The GeoCenter at Møns Klint

Next to the cliffs, you will find the GeoCenter at Møns Klint. This is a great place to visit to get information on the cliffs and the history of their creation throughout time. With more than 20 different, hands-on activities, the GeoCenter is a great, family-friendly place. Since the GeoCenter is not open year-round, you will want to check their website for their opening hours. You can even buy tickets online. Visit the GeoCenter website to learn more.

GeoCenter Playground at Møns Klint

Just outside the GeoCenter, we found a fun play area for the kids to burn off some energy. It was great to find a place for the kids to play, since we had spent an hour and a half driving from Stevns Camping. The boys enjoyed using their imaginations climbing on what looked like giant bones. There was also some large, egg-like structures. It was a very unique playground, to say the least. Next to the playground, we even found a picnic table to eat the lunch we brought.

Café Møns Klint

For those looking for something to eat, you are in luck. The GeoCenter has a nice café at the top of the stairs. Serving a variety of warm and cold foods and drinks, the café has everything from Danish specialty dishes to sandwiches, local desserts, and ice cream. You can even enjoy a beer on the patio or a cozy meal inside at one of their many tables. We enjoyed a nice ice cream before we left for the day!

Walking Routes at Møns Klint

If you love to walk or hike in nature, you will love the many walking paths at Møns Klint. In fact, there are 7 main walking routes that you can take throughout Klinteskoven. Walking routes include:

• Liselund Park 2.5km
• Jydelejet 3.3km
• Havrelukke 3.0km
• Møns Klint northern circular walk 2.7km
• Møns Klint southern circular walk 2.3km
• Høvblege 2.2km

We only spent one day at Møns Klint, so we were not able to experience all the paths. However, we had some amazing views on one particular path we took. Get a map of all the paths at www.moensklint.dk.

The Many Sites of Møns Klint (Northern Circular Path)

After enjoying our picnic lunch and playing on the playground. We were ready to explore the northern circular path at Møns Klint. This was labeled as path number 4 on the map and started near the playground. Immediately at the beginning of this path, we had to walk up some stairs. However, the views of the cliffs were also instantaneous once we reached the top of the stairs.

The path curved along the cliffs and gave us some great views. It was amazing to see how the cliffs seemed to go straight down into the water.

Other parts of the path took us through the forest with large roots sticking up every which way.

Dronningestolen at Møns Klint

We even learned about a couple different spots that were very different. One was Dronningestolen, which was the highest viewpoint at Møns Klint at 128 meters.  There is a story with this section of the cliffs. They say that the queen of the Cliff King would sit and watch the waves waiting for her king to return. That is why it is called “the queen’s chair”.

Gukkene Hule at Møns Klint

Another interesting area was called the Gukkene Hule. This is a place where there is a large divide in the rocks. You can walk to the railing and look down in between two cliffs. It is a fantastic spot and great photo opportunity.

Vitmunds Nakke at Møns Klint

One of the final, scenic, lookout points before we reached the end of the path was at Vitmunds Nakke. This area also seemed to have more trees than the other cliffs.

The Stairs at Røde Udfald at Møns Klint

As we reached the end of the path, we noticed a stairway that zigzagged down to the water. We felt adventurous and decided to see what lied at the bottom of the stairs. Though it was many steps, I highly recommend taking the trip down to the coast. Though I had just had knee surgery less than two months before this trip, I was still able to enjoy my day and most of the stairs.

In the end, only my husband and older son made it down to the water. The stairs became too steep at the very end for me to try it. I guess I will have to overcome my fear of heights another day!

From the beginning of trail 4 to the end of the stairs at Røde Udfald, it took us nearly an hour. Of course, taking the path back to the GeoCenter didn’t take us as long since we weren’t making as many stops. If you are in a rush, you can do this path in less time. We, however, decided to take our time to enjoy the views and take pictures.

Trying another Path at Møns Klint

Since we still had some time, we decided to walk on the southern path, path number 5. This path was mostly a wooden bridge of sorts which was much easier. I even saw some people with strollers and dogs. Though this path was easier, I didn’t think that the views were as nice as the previous path.

If you are interested in getting a different viewpoint, you can take the beach path that extends from the end of path 4 to the end of the path 5. In fact, where paths 4 and 5 meet is another staircase. You could do either path 4 or 5 by the beach or combine them and walk both paths. It is up to you. 

When we were there, the path that was at the junction of paths 4 and 5 was closed, so it wasn´t an option for us. However, there are 5 staircases along the entire cliff side, so you can have many great experiences if you try them all.

Møns Fyr (Lighthouse)

Before leaving the Møns Klint area, we decided to take the short drive south to the bottom corner of the island to see the Møns Fyr (lighthouse). I love lighthouses and never miss an opportunity to visit one.

We were a bit disappointed when we found out that the lighthouse wasn’t something we could go inside. In fact, it was someone’s home. Instead, we had to see it from the parking lot that was located nearby.

We were also still able to take a path to the water, which could be the reason many people visit there. This is also the beginning of another path in the forest. This path is actually not in the list from above, but it ends near the southern tip of path 5.

Busene Have

The other area we visited before leaving was the Busene Have. This was just a beach on the south side of the island. It was very peaceful and seemed to be a great place for a picnic or dip in the water. Since it was a cool October day, we didn’t go in the water. Instead, we had a snack and looked at the waves.

If you would like to spend some time walking along the water, there is a path from the Busene Have to the Møns Fyr. Also, if you have a full day to hike the entire path from south to north, the path at the Busene Have is where you can start on that is relatively low in elevation.

Overall Thoughts on Møns Klint

We really enjoyed our visit to Møns Klint. We were there on a sunny day, which was great for seeing the views. My recommendation is to visit on less wet and clear days. Foggy days will make it hard to have a good experience because of limited visibility. Many people also visit the cliffs during the summer, when the weather is much nicer for being outside. However, we thought it was quite a nice place in the fall with the changing of the leaves.

Møns Klint had been on our bucket list since we moved to Denmark, and it did not disappoint us. The only shame was that we didn´t have enough time to explore all of the paths. I could definitely see spending a weekend on Møn to try out all of the paths. Less than a two-hour drive from Copenhagen, Møns Klint is also a great choice for a day trip from Copenhagen. I highly recommend it for your next trip in Denmark.
