Denmark’s Secret Tree House Park: Wow Park

I remember seeing Swiss Family Robinson as a child, and thinking how cool it would be to live in a tree. I thought places like that existed only in the movies. That was until I discovered a secret tree house fun park located in the western part of Denmark. Though it wasn’t a place where you could live or even stay overnight, it still gave you the opportunity to imagine and explore what life in the trees would be like. Come along, and I’ll show it to you!

Entrance to WOW PARK in Skjern, Denmark

“Wow” was the word carved in wood outside the entrance to the WOW PARK: Tree House Park. We didn’t feel “wowed” by it though. The large parking lot seemed much like it would at any other place in the countryside: gravel with lots of grass. There were some trees just next to the grounds, but we didn’t notice anything special about them.

We weren’t really sure what we would find there or if it would be something that could occupy our time for more than an hour. Little did we know of what awaited us in those secret trees.

We walked into the large, barn-looking building to pay our admission and get a stamp. Here, there were long tables where you could put your things if you were with a larger group. I would imagine that this could be a very popular place for school groups or birthday parties.

We were there in the early part of the spring, just after they had opened for the season, and though the day was cool, it wasn’t too cold to be outside. We walked past the tables and outside. It was a bit confusing. We didn’t know what we were going to find at WOW PARK nor what we should expect. Once we were outside, we walked towards the trees.

After all, it was a tree house park! The forest would be where we would find all the action. As we got closer, it was almost as if we were entering Oz for the first time, like Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz when all of a sudden, everything was in color. For us, all of a sudden, we saw the tree houses, and that is when I understood why the park was called “Wow”. It took my breath away!

The Main Tree Houses

There were four, multi-colored tree houses in different trees. Each had their own rope walkway and either a tube slide or bag slide. One tree house had both. My boys looked up at them with wonder and were hesitant at first. It was a bit overwhelming! 🙂

They asked if they could go in them as if it were illegal, but when I reassured them that this is what we came to do, they quickly ran towards the closest rope walkway and started to climb.

Though I am not a person who appreciates heights, I tagged along at the request of my youngest. I figured that I could just walk back down the rope walkway, but when this idea gave my youngest a pout, I had to suck it up and sail down the tube with him.

Luckily, it wasn’t very fast, so I felt brave to do it again and again! 🙂 We had so much fun, and the boys really loved the feeling of being in a small house in the trees. I know I did too!

Soccer Field in the Sky

After exploring the inside of each of the tree houses more than once. We also noticed a large netted area high up in the trees with balls on it. Apparently, this was an elevated soccer field. (Insert shocked face here!) WOW PARK was filled with surprises! I had never thought of playing soccer high up in the trees, but we just had to try it!

The thought of such a net being able to hold lots of people as they ran around, kicking soccer balls was almost a bit much. I had to admit that I felt a bit freaked-out! My fears of heights and falling were starting to take over, but again, I had to focus my attention on the unique experience that laid before me and not let a little fear stop me.

WOW PARK even had the nets designed so that there were goals. You could actually play a game. The hole led to another section, where the balls were kept safe and wouldn’t fall out of the net and down below. It was really quite smart, and they had tons of balls to allow many children (and adults) the opportunity to play. The sign said that it was for people ages 2-102, so it wasn’t odd to see many adults on it at one period of time.

Lower Net at WOW PARK in Skjern

Next to the elevated soccer field, there was also another netted area that was closer to the ground. This one was more my speed. It had larger balls and some were taller than I was, which was kind of fun for the kids to jump on or try to jump on, at least. The feeling you got from walking on these rope fields was much like that of a bouncy house.

My children loved it and thought it was fun to bounce along. They used it much like a trampoline and fell back many times with laughter. Running on this type of net field wasn’t impossible, but it really looked funny if you tried.

Ground Activities

On the ground, there were a few other things that would occupy the young-at-heart at WOW PARK. My boys loved playing with the ropes, swinging from place to place. My husband showed us his skills on the balance beam (a fallen tree), and I was able to have a nice cuddle with the boys on the hammocks!

We were lucky to come very early in the day and in the season, so we could have a few calm moments to ourselves before others started to arrive.

Zip Line

We could have played on the zip lines for the rest of the afternoon at WOW PARK! It was a lot of fun! They had two zip lines next to each other so that we could use this as an opportunity to race each other.

No matter how many times we tried, my older son always seemed to win! 🙂 Already we were having a great time finding the many ways that they put the “wow” in WOW PARK, and there was so much more yet to explore.

Picnic Area

We spent quite a bit of time in the front section of WOW PARK, and it was time that we stopped for lunch. We had brought our own food and planned to have a picnic that day. It was nice to see that there were a few tables to sit at, and the tables were located in the sun, which made it a bit warmer for us.

As I mentioned before, there were larger tables back in the main building, but we wanted to eat outside! They also had a fire pit which could be used for larger groups, but we were content with our sandwiches and veggies!

Tunnels

We decided to leave the tree houses and see what else we could find. We came upon a mound of earth that had tubes inside it. Each place at WOW PARK was marked with a sign, so it gave up the instructions of what to do. We were happy for this. This is definitely the place you don’t want to wear nice close.

We were glad that we had worn old “play clothes”, since this tunnel required us to crawl around. Some of the tunnels had leaves and dirt in them, but they were made of plastic and easy to maneuver.  They were also very dark. I don’t know why I would think that a tunnel in the ground would have lights, but they didn’t. This really gave a new meaning to the word “explore”, and my boys loved the idea of being hidden in the tunnels.

There are more hidden treasures under ground in Midtjylland (Central Denmark). Check out the Mønsted Kalkgruber (Limestone mines) HERE!

They even got me in there exploring with them, so I can say that the tunnels are not just for the small. They are also for this (small) mom! 🙂 Next time, I should just lose the backpack before going in!

Play Huts

Next to the tunnels on the edge of the tree houses were three small huts. My children loved anything that had to do with houses, forts, campers, etc. They loved to imagine that they had their own place. I don’t really know many children who don’t love to pretend like this.

Not only were these little huts great for pretending, they were surrounded by fallen tree trunks that created a sort of path for them to follow to get entry into the huts. The boys took turns “owning” the different huts and inviting us over to “visit”.

The third hut was for me and their dad, or so they said. It was nice to be included in their neighborhood at WOW PARK! I loved the addition of these three huts. From a quick glance, it might seem that they were just added bits of decoration, but they were really one of the best places for the four of us to play as a family!

Giant Swing

The next stop at WOW PARK was the “Giant Swing” as it was called on the sign. This was a balance beam that was suspended from the top instead of anchored at the bottom. It also moved, which added a bit of a challenge. The sign said that 7 people could stand on it at a time, which I envisioned would be a lot of fun. The boys wasted no time in giving it a try.

I just loved seeing all the things that WOW PARK had that didn’t touch the ground. It was really quite interesting how different everything was, and my boys approached each new thing with a certain feeling of wonder and excitement. The day was proving to be full of surprises with no dull moments!

Zip Line Swing

As we continued to move on from the giant swing, we found another swing that was built for a group of small children. This one was great for the little ones who might have had a harder time sitting on the other zip line. My boys made some new friends in this group swing at WOW PARK, but they needed a little help from the parents to pull them back and let them go. Adults could have also tried this swing, but I think we would have had to wait in line! 🙂 It was very popular!

Another Set of Tree Houses

We continued on our way once we were able to get the boys off of the giant swing. We were very surprised to see that there were more tree houses off in the distance. In order to get to this new set of tree houses, we had to take some man-made stairs down to another section of the forest. We had no idea that there was so much more to explore.

We were very eager to try these new houses and of course, the slides! WOW PARK was certainly the best name for this place, because everywhere we went, you could hear the boys saying “wow”. We were really having such a great time at WOW PARK! We loved being in the forest, and the way that the park was organized added a lot of excitement to the day. The boys were never bored with any of the sections and had a lot of fun!

Mini Climb Wall and Slides

At the bottom of the new tree houses, we noticed that there was a section that went a bit farther down into the valley of the forest. Here was somewhat of a tarp slide on both sides of a mini climbing wall. My boys found some friends on these slides and had a great time while the adults visited with each other. There were so many friendly people at WOW PARK; it was perfect for a day out with the family and of course, perfect for making new friends.

Maze

The last place that we explored at WOW PARK was the maze. After visiting Labyrinthia a few years before, my boys were very familiar with this type of maze, and they were ready to “conquer” the one at WOW PARK. It was fun to walk around and think that we were sure to have found the center of it all, but we were mistaken and had to back track.

For some reason, our constant failures were very funny and made us laugh. It also fueled our fires to walk through the maze even faster than before. It was funny how my boys played and walked for hours at WOW PARK, and they never complained about being tired or having sore feet. I knew that they would be complaining if we were walking this long in a big city.

There is something about being out in nature and having a ton of fun in the process, that makes a person not even notice the amount of activity he or she is experiencing.

Since the day was getting later and we had a bit of a drive back home before it was time to make supper, we decided to leave for the day. One thing that we missed out on was the animal area. They had baby goats, which were located close to the entrance. We did, however, stop in the cafe/gift shop to buy a big cookie before leaving. With all the activity that day, we needed a bit of sugar to top off the experience!

Overall Impressions

WOW PARK exceeded all expectations we had. The tree houses were very well-designed and very safe for children and adults. We loved the variety of different activities, and it was nice that my 5 year old could participate in everything that his dad could also do.

There were no restrictions for age or size. WOW PARK made it very easy for the entire family to be able to have a nice time, playing together. We will definitely go back, and I would also recommend this for any large group of children or adults if they want to have a nice, active time. (Side note: I took a group of 5th and 6th grade students there and they also had a fantastic time!)

Thanks so much to Aage and Jakob Hindhede, the creators and owners of WOW PARK for making such a creative and wonderful place for families to spend time together in nature! We really appreciated you allowing us entry for the day, and we are very happy to return for years to come! 🙂
