WOW PARK Treehouse Park in Billund, Denmark

Have you ever wished that you could live in a treehouse? When I was younger, I loved the movie Swiss Family Robinson by Disney, because I loved the idea of having a treehouse as a home. When I moved to Denmark, it was then that I realized that I could spend an entire day, playing in the trees and live out my childhood all over again at WOW PARK!

Two WOW PARKs to Enjoy in Denmark

Of all the places to visit in Denmark during those first few years living abroad, we made WOW PARK in Skjern one of the top attractions for us to visit when in western Denmark. We didn’t know it at the time, but our first trip to the original WOW PARK lit a fire within us! We loved this unique, family experience and decided that we wanted more like it and sought out the best family attractions on our travels in Denmark.

When we heard that WOW PARK was opening a new and bigger location in Billund, Denmark, we knew we had to experience it!! We loved going to Billund for many reasons: Lalandia, Legoland, camping at Legoland Holiday Village, etc., so we were excited to add the new WOW PARK to our list of best things to do in Billund!

Those beloved, Swiss-Family-Robinson memories were coming back to me, and since our boys were now older and more active, we knew that visiting WOW PARK in Billund would be the perfect thing for us to do as a family on that beautifully warm and sunny, summer day in Denmark.

Location and Parking at WOW PARK in Billund, Denmark

We lived about an hour north of Billund in Denmark, so the trip down to WOW PARK was very easy. The treehouse park is located on the southeastern part of town away from the other attractions that Billund is known for. We were happy to see signs along the road that helped us find our way!

We arrived shortly after 10 o’clock in the morning on a Sunday in June. The park had only been open for three days, but news had got out that a treehouse park had come to Billund. There were already a good amount of cars in the parking lot when we parked and walked to the entrance.

The entrance had lots of wooden sculptures, and we loved the sight of the wooden nose and glasses, as well as the giant slingshot that greeted us as we walked towards the ticket counter.

We approached the ticket counter to get our tickets for the day and then made our way over to the main entrance where someone was waiting to help us scan our tickets. The entrance was decorated with small treehouses, and everything was so colorful! It helped to instill a spark of excitement within us, and we wanted more!!

Wagons at WOW PARK

We noticed right away that there was a shed that housed many wagons that guests could use to transport their belongings and children while visiting WOW PARK.

I loved it when places like this would help visitors out by lending them a wagon to pull all of their stuff! I was usually the one in charge of our bag, so I tried to pack light on that trip. After all, I had trees to climb!

WOW PARK Shop and Treats

On the other side of the path from the wagons was the shop. Here, you could find some cute gifts for nature: stuffed animals, outdoor kits for children, bags, etc. There was also a smores station where people could buy what they needed to make smores over a fire, and there was a separate section where you could buy ice cream.

Climbing Area and Toilets at WOW PARK in Billund, Denmark

After an hour’s drive in the car, our first stop was to the bathrooms, which were strategically placed in the middle of WOW PARK. It was also somewhat hidden from view, since it didn’t appear to be your average, boring toilet building.

There was nothing boring at WOW PARK!! The toilet rooms were set inside a hill that you could climb and slide down. Amazing!!

They were also very cute on the inside. The rooms were made for different sizes of people (adult and child) with beautiful wooden pieces. My oldest son even mentioned that he thought that they were pretty cool! When a 10-year-old boy talks about how much they like a bathroom, you know it has to be cool!

The 6 Zones of WOW PARK

We studied the map as if we were going on a treasure hunt to find all the hidden wonders in Denmark. The boys, of course, were in charge, so we followed them wherever they wanted to go. This started our day going from one colorful zone on the map to the next, and it was our mission to try everything at least once!

Away, we went!

Lilla Zone / Purple Zone at WOW PARK

We decided to start our quest for fun in the Purple (lilla) Zone at WOW PARk, which was the closest zone to the toilets, so it made sense to start there.

Storkereden

At first, there was a big debate of where to go, but when the boys saw this really cool treehouse and slide called the Storkereden or “stork’s nest”, they quickly forgot about their original plan and started to climb.

I thought I would play along and went up the right-side ladder to surprise them as they went up the left-side ladder. They noticed me as I was about to cross a rope bridge when a strong gust of wind started to blow. Nothing touches a mom’s heart more than the worried looks on those boys’ faces.

They wanted me to be careful so that I didn’t blow away and fall to my death! Perhaps, I was just their guinea pig, who showed them that the park was completely safe, but I liked thinking of them as sweet boys who cared for their mom!

Leap or “Slide Ride” of Faith for Mom

This was also apparent with my youngest as I was about to go down the slide. He knows full well that I have somewhat of a fear of heights.

Yes. I would have made a horrible member of the Swiss Family Robinson… I know!

My son went down the slide first, and then it was my turn. He offered to catch me at the end of the slide! I told him that he was wonderful, but if this was going as fast as I thought it would, he’d better get out of the way!

Long story short…we all survived even though my screams probably could have been heard all throughout the park. Oops!

Ørentvisten

I loved that WOW PARK named many of their attractions after things that you would find in nature. It really helped visitors connect even more with the outdoors in my opinion.

I decided to sit the next attraction out, so my husband stepped up. This one was called Ørentvisten or earwig and was very close to the ground. My oldest son had recently started watching an obstacle course game show on TV, and this attraction reminded him of that show.

He was very excited when he finished Ørentvisten, which seemed to prove his previous idea that he should be a contestant on a potential kid-version of that show.

Guldsmeden

As we made our way through this beautiful, forested area of Midtjylland, we tried more of the fun attractions. The boys were very excited to try the Gudsmeden net. This was a double-decker net with a slide at each level. Their dad really enjoyed playing with them and the gigantic balls. It was very funny to watch them chasing each other from down below.

I loved how creative the climbing nets were on the different nets and towers. WOW PARK always offered a new experience with every play area.

Becoming a Braver Mom with Each Attraction at WOW PARK

I was feeling brave to try it with them, and I was so glad I did! The slides look scary, but they are really the best slides I’ve even been on. This slide may be very high up in the air, but the speed is slow and you feel almost carried down instead of thrown down. It gave this scaredy-cat courage to try another attraction!

The boys, however, went up and done this net about 3 or 4 times before we encouraged them to move on. It was by far, one of their favorites!

Stålormen

Whatever the boys passed, they just had to try! This included every net, swing, and climbing path!

Gulv Zone / Yellow Zone at WOW PARK

We reached the Yellow Zone within WOW PARK without even knowing that we had crossed into it. The boys headed straight for more attractions with their eyes to the skies!

Græshoppen

The Græshoppen or “grasshopper” net was next. This was so impressive with its many layers, bouncy balls and very tall slide! The boys approached this attraction at a run, and they even got me to follow along. Again, there was no fear in going down the slide! It made me want to try more nets and climbing towers!

Mariehønen

The Mariehønen or “ladybug” was the next giant net that we found at WOW PARK! This was another playing field that was suspended high in the trees. The boys played up there with some other children while they chased each other and pushed the very large, colorful balls around!

I particularly liked that this net had two, small playhouses next to it. Though many of the rope bridges and ladders were made for people of all ages to climb, it was nice to know that they thought of the very small who might want to have other options when being around these large, netted areas at WOW PARK! I know that we also enjoyed playing pretend in them!

They also had hammocks and benches in different parts of the park around where the nets and climbing towers were. This would allow any tired mom or dad a great place to rest as their overly active kids had a great time on one of the tree-top attractions.

Gærdesmutten

One area we would never avoid at WOW PARK were the ziplines. I know that many playgrounds throughout Denmark have these fun attractions, but as an American, I’m not used to them. They seem to be the neatest thing ever, in my mind, and I love that I get to be a kid again at WOW PARK and play on them just as often as my kids.

Bikuberne

Perhaps, one of the coolest treetop areas at WOW PARK in Billund was the Bikuberne or “beehive”! Not only was it very interesting to see a curved, rope walkway, but it was also fun to see that this attraction had also a treehouse, two towers and a fun slide. We really enjoyed climbing up this play area as a family!

It was also from this height that we were able to get a peek at our next stop in the gulv zone or “yellow zone” at WOW PARK, which was the Flagermusen.

Flagermusen

Just the sight of Flagermusen swings at WOW PARK in Billund will attract your curiosity!! Nothing can give you more of the feeling of acting like Tarzan than this swing! Unlike Tarzan, you actually get to sit while enjoying this fun way of swinging back and forth. I could have easily spent much of my time on this attraction.

It was great how diverse WOW PARK was! I knew that there would be lots of treehouses, which we were very excited about, but I did not imagine that they would have so many other types of swings, which happen to be my favorite! This was my 7^th Heaven with this swing!

Rosa Zone / Pink Zone at WOW PARK

Edderkoppen

Another fun-looking swing that I saw while riding on Flagermusen was called Edderkoppen, which meant “spider” in Danish, and it actually looked like a spider with all of the different swings and ropes. This was much like the Flagermusen, since you would be swinging back and forth, but instead of sitting parallel to another person, you were all in a circle. My boys and I loved that!

Muldvarpen

In the middle of these two fun options was the Muldvarpen or “the mole”, which was a tunnel you could walk through to pretend to be a mole underground. My boys loved to explore ever tunnel they could find, and it was even more fun when they took their dad, who stood at 6’4” (193cm) tall, a height that isn’t well-known for small places. Luckily, we got him to fit!

It was actually at the next attraction, however, that he really needed to channel his inner child and find a way to shrink.

Sommerfuglen

The next treetop play area was called Sommerfuglen or “the butterfly”. We decided to try this one as a family, which we thought was very funny once we arrived inside the treehouse. This is where our children and I were able to walk easily to the other rope bridge on the other side of the treehouse.

My husband, on the other hand, got stuck! We had a nice laugh at how he had to find his way out of that treehouse because he was so big, but if that tall man could do it, I think anyone could!

Klappegederne

As we were walking away from the pink zone or the “Rosa Zone”, we noticed some animals. Apparently, just as the WOW PARK in Skjern had animals, so did the WOW PARK in Billund. This is also another added touch in case you need a break from all of the climbing, swinging and sliding; you can go and pet a goat!

Things to Eat at the WOW PARK in Billund, Denmark

It was around 12 o’clock, so we decided to look for the Madladen, which was where we would be getting our lunch for the day! I want to say a special thank you to WOW PARK for sponsoring our delicious meal.

I was so excited to see that the menu not only had items that fit the taste buds of the entire family, but it also seemed to be healthier than the normal food options you would get at other attractions and amusement parks.

The menu was broken up into different sections: burgers, salads, foldies and potatoes. I loved that the burger and meat options weren’t what you’d expect. The meats were pulled turkey, beef brisket and smoked ham. I enjoyed the idea that the boys could try something completely new, and I loved that there were many vegetarian options for me!

Vegetarian Options at WOW PARK Billund

I ordered the Veggie Burger, which was a shredded, veggie, BBQ chicken. I hadn’t had a BBQ veggie meat sandwich since visiting the USA. It was so delicious that I could have eaten that meal for an entire week!

I also loved how the side dish for all of the meals was herbed potatoes instead of fries. They were not only a healthier option but also tasted very yummy.

Plenty of Meat Options at the WOW PARK’s Madladen Food Court

My husband got a beef brisket salad, and my youngest son got a kids’ burger, which had the brisket on it instead of a normal burger. You have never seen a kid eat a sandwich so fast in your entire life! I guess he must have liked it! 😊 My older son ordered the kids’ foldie, which was very much like a pizza just folded in half. This was also a hit!

The Madladen food court at WOW PARK Billund had tables inside and outside. We chose to eat inside, since it offered such a great atmosphere. The added wooden features gave us the feeling that we were in a rustic lodge in the northern woods somewhere. I loved how the benches and tables seemed to be handcrafted out of large trees. It was beautiful.

More Nature in the Madladen Food Court at WOW PARK

To add to the ambiance of the food court, they also had a tree inside with smaller treehouses on different branches. A couple of young girls showed us how the tree could be spun around. They also showed us a giant moth that you could control its wings with a string. It was a lot of fun, and the added bits of interactive décor entertained us and WOW-ed us as we waiting for our meal.

I also noticed that there were people eating outside who brought their own food, and there were also those who used the grills that were provided by WOW PARK to cook the food that they brought. It was nice to see that WOW PARK gave guests the option of doing this. It made the place feel very friendly!

As we finished our meal, my two sons decided how best to tackle the rest of the park as they looked very diligently at the map.

Rød Zone / Red Zone at WOW PARK

The Rød (red) Zone was next on our radar. It was also very easy to access, since we ate lunch at the middle of the park.

Hvepserederne

The first treetop playground we visited was the Hvepserederne, or “the wasps” in English. I decided to skip this attraction at first because the large, red pathway to the top seemed a bit too much for a lady who just had a meal. It was hard to explain this type of ladder, because it actually looked like a square with many levels. You’ll have to see the picture to get a better idea.

Going on an Adventure with the Hvepserederne

I tried to make my way around the course to the end to meet them there, but I must not have studied the map very carefully, because I didn’t anticipate how long this area was. Hvepserederne not only had 5 treehouses in total, but it also had three slides and rope bridges to connect it all at the top.

There were also many different ways to access the top, so I found the least physical walkway and headed up to surprise my family. I am glad that I did because it was a lot of fun. The boys actually climbed up and slid down this attraction many times! It was a huge hit with the entire family!

Vandedderkoppen

Near the bottom of the Hvepserederne were lots of ropes the boys could climb. These reminded me of the ropes you would have to climb if you went to an American high school. My youngest was up for the challenge, when my older son noticed an even more interesting and daring attraction called the Vandedderkoppen, or “water spider”.

This was a small, squared space of water that had round, wooden stumps in it. There were also ropes hanging down so that whoever wanted to try to cross this path could use the ropes to help him/her go from stump to stump.

To Get Wet or Not to Get Wet…That is the Question!

I don’t know what it is about my older son, because he is always drawn to things with water. My husband and I just looked at each other because we had a feeling that this wasn’t going to end well. Not only did our son like to play around water, but he almost always would fall in, too!

Getting a little bit more than halfway, he missed a stump and started to swing back and forth while his shoes landed in the water. After some encouragement, he finally made it to the other side. We loved the fact that he didn’t get upset and even felt that he wanted to give it another shot after he saw two boys his own age finish the course with no issues.

Though we were hopeful that he would get it this time, he actually splashed down in the water, soaking his entire right side. 🙂 It was just a good thing that it was a hot day and that he would (hopefully) dry soon. We all got a good laugh out of the situation, and I think he liked to have an excuse for getting cooled off from the hot temperatures of the day!

Musvågen

Both boys were ready for another treetop play area and practically ran to the Musvågen, or “the buzzard” which was a really neat attraction. Of all the treehouses in the park, this one reminded me mostly of the ones from Swiss Family Robinson because they were multi-leveled and connected.

There were tower platforms and also two treehouses at the top. Instead of there being a rope bridge to connect them, there was a small slide. I really liked the variety of the treehouses, slides and play areas that they had. It made visiting each one a new adventure.

It was no surprise that our younger son mentioned that he felt wet coming down the slide after his brother! Maybe we should have warned him that after falling in a small, pool of water, his brother may leave a wet path wherever he went. I guess they both found a way to cool off on that warm day at WOW PARK Billund.

Svalerne

Luckily, the next spot on the map of WOW PARK Billund was a cluster of four ziplines called Svalerne, “the swallows”. If my boys were wet from the Vandedderkoppen, they were dry after multiple turns on the Svalerne which airdried them quite nicely on this very warm, summer day in Denmark.

My husband and I found a nearby bench and were able to have a nice chat as the boys had fun on the ziplines. I loved that WOW PARK remembered to add benches for those needing a break from all the excitement.

It was also nice to see workers walk by from time to time to check on the visitors and to make sure that the bottles of hand sanitizer were full for visitors during this time of easing out of the quarantine of COVID-19. It was nice that the park was taking precautions.

Rødspætten

The boys had a great time hopping on the Rødspætten, which is like a trampoline that is set up higher in the trees. It isn’t the highest attraction, but the boys really enjoyed playing on it with other children. They could jump on a trampoline for hours. Just the thought makes me queasy!

Tusindbenet

Next to the Rødspætten was another obstacle course called Tusindbenet, or centipede. This obstacle course was a bit more difficult than the first one they had tried earlier in the day, which made it also much more fun! They had a lot of side climbs to do and had to keep their balance, but they did a great job!

Blå Zone / Blue Zone at WOW PARK

When we approached the “blå zone” or blue zone, we were actually surprised to see that it wasn’t set amongst the trees like the other areas. Instead, there were some places that were in a field and others that seemed to be on the top of hills. We started in the middle since it was a very hot day, and the middle attraction had water.

Vandets Verden

Vandets Verden, or “the world of water” is an area where people can play with water by moving wooden pathways around to change the direction of the water. It was a really neat addition to the park, since it was so different from the treehouses, swings, etc.

Skruptudsen

I have to admit that my attention was starting to be drawn to the largest hill in that section. This is where a tower stood with a very long, black slide-looking path going all the way down to the main path of the “zone”. This attraction was called Skruptudsen, which was Danish for “the toad”, and had a slide that was nothing like the slides we had seen on the treehouses.

As I got closer, I noticed a small blue sled sitting on the slide, which was how you were supposed to use the slide. I was still feeling brave from my good experiences with the other slides, so I thought I would give this one a go.

Letting the Boys Try the Slide First

Of course, I had two small guinea pigs with me to try out the ride before I did. I strategically learned what not to do from my children, which may seem like bad parenting, but I think it was just a basic survival tactic. They would have gone down anyway.

The boys were fine after trying the slide and actually wanted to go again, but they allowed me to take a turn! My husband watched with sheer interest at what his normally-freaked-out-by-slides wife was about to do. I wanted to know too!

When I finally got the nerve to push myself down, I loved it! Yes. It was much faster than the other slides, but I really didn’t seem to mind! I started to understand how my kids were feeling. I wanted to go again!

Rævehulerne

My oldest son started to get bored with his mom on this slide, so he convinced his brother to go into the Rævehulerne, which meant “fox holes”. This was another tunnel system that was underneath the large tunnel that the Skruptudsen was on. They really had a fun time, since there were multiple ways to get in and out of the tunnel.  

Hugormen

We decided to tackle the next attraction as a family, and this one was called Hugormen or “the adder”. The look of the Hugormen would attract anyone’s attention, because it looked like a giant snake’s head just sitting in the grass. Nothing else like this existed in the park, so we were all very curious about what we were about to find inside it.

As we approached, we noticed that like most other things at the park, the snake’s head was made of some type of natural thatching. It was so well-made and designed and seemed perfect for WOW PARK in Bilund.

The map said that it was a labyrinth, so we stepped inside the head and following the body around to the end. The body created a pathway tunnel made from sticks. Some areas were very low, so it would be a challenge for tall people, like my husband. We liked that we were giving him a good workout for the day.

Ørnen

When we reached the end of the snake, we saw two other labyrinths. One was called Ørnen, or eagle, which was again made from what looked like branches. This labyrinth was a circle, and if you reached the middle point, you would see that there was a tower.

The boys were excited to run through all of the mazes first so that they would be able to assist us in getting in and out. They were so helpful….and impatient! 😊

Myretuen

The last part of the blue zone that we visited was called the Myretuen or “anthill”, which was what I thought of when I heard the word labyrinth. This was the square-shaped maze that would be made of wooden walls. You would be walking down one path, and then all of a sudden, you’d be at a dead end.

The funny thing about this maze was that the path was filled with very tall grasses. There was shorter grass in the very center of the path, which made it easier to move around, but I think that it gave it more of a feeling of walking through a jungle. I quite enjoyed it.

Reaching the Lookout Point in the Myretuen Labyrinth at WOW PARK Billund

There was also a middle section that had two lookout points. Both of the towers in this maze and the labyrinth mentioned before were not made out of the wooden boards, but more of fallen trees. You really needed to watch what you were doing when you climbed up and down on them, which I think made the whole experience a bit more daring and fun.

Grøn Zone / Green Zone at WOW PARK

I don’t know about my kids, but it was about this time, that I was getting pretty tired. We decided that we would head out for the day, but we wanted to do one last thing before we left. The wonderful people at WOW PARK had graciously given us a voucher for a free bag of popping corn, so we were really excited to try to make our own campfire popcorn.  

To be quite honest, I would have walked right past these bags of corn kernels had I not been given the voucher. I guess they were easy to overlook. I was so glad that we got to try it, though. That was a very unique experience in Denmark that we hadn’t had anywhere else.

Bålstederne

I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect as I took my bag of corn from the shop to the area where they had Bålstederne or “the firepits”. Having a firepit at a place like this was really quite fascinating. It gave you the feeling that you were truly spending your day in nature, since you could even make a snack over an open fire.

WOW PARK provided campfire cages that you could use to pop the corn, so we got to work making our own popcorn. I noticed that there were other families roasting snobrød, bread dough that is wrapped around a long stick, and some others were making S’MORES with food kits that they had bought in the store. That would have to be something we could try on our next visit!

Sneglehusene

In the green zone, we also noticed a really nice playground that was for toddlers, which had a canopy-covered resting area nearby it. I liked that these two places were also very close to the bathrooms. This would make it a perfect spot for the afternoon, if I had smaller children.

Overall Impressions

Can you imagine that there are places that I didn’t mention in this post? WOW PARK in Billund has so much to offer than just what we experienced in one day of visiting the park. We know that we will have to return to have more fun in the near future!

Overall, I really loved how this place was not just for kids. I enjoyed seeing so many adults playing with their children and having a great time letting their inner child out to play!! 

I could see this as a great place to get a season pass to play after school or on weekends, and I know that it would be the perfect place to bring children on a playdate! Playgrounds are so great, and because you get to explore nature in a way like no other, WOW PARK really stands apart from the rest.

It brings families closer to nature and lets children experience creative play in the great outdoors. We will most definitely be back and would recommend anyone to add it to their Denmark travel itinerary. You may have 5 days in Denmark or just want to make a day trip from Copenhagen. No matter, the reason, you’ll agree that spending a day at WOW PARK in Billund is one of the best things to do in Denmark!
