Verdenskortet: Denmark’s World Map Play Park

Placed along the Klejtrup Sรธ (lake) where northern Jutland (Nordjylland) meets central Jutland (Midtjylland), Verdenskortet or โ€œThe Worldโ€™s Mapโ€ is a great place for a fun-filled day outdoors. Families and couples come for the variety of activities but come back for the hygge (coziness) that they experience in such a place that allows people to enjoy their leisure at their own pace.

We first visited Verdenskortet with my husbandโ€™s company, since a group of workers were making it a family day at Verdenskortet. We happened to have picked the wettest day of the year at a place where all of the activities are outside.

Luckily, it doesnโ€™t rain forever in Denmark, so we were able to play with the different outdoor toys and games during our trip. Rain clothes are must-have items on any trip in Denmark, and they would have been a good idea if we had remembered them. Once the rain stopped, however, we ended up having a really nice time, and even made it a priority to return a few days later to pick up where we left off.

Where is Verdenskortet in Denmark ?

Verdenskortet is pretty easy to find if you visit Viborg or Hobro. It is located in the beautiful rolling hills and farmland with plenty of opportunity to see cows and horses along the way. When driving to Verdenskortet, Klejtrup is just a 15-minute drive southwest of Hobro or a 25-minute drive northeast of Viborg.

Once you find Verdenskortet, you just have the dilemma of deciding what fun activity to try first. Let me help!

What to do at Verdenskortet near Hobro, Denmark

1. Verdenskortet / The Worldโ€™s Map

Chances are that you will want to see the Worldโ€™s Map first when you get to the park. This is also a great choice, since it is quite a sight to see. Climb the observation tower to get a better look of the map and hear the story of its creation at the top of the tower.

It was from this platform that I told my boys different locations to find. The world map had flags for all the different countries, so my boys just needed to read the flags to find the destinations. They really loved โ€œexploring the worldโ€!

Of course, they might have gotten a little bit of help from time to time to know which continent to go to, but it was a great learning game for them to get a better idea of where places are located on the worldโ€™s map. It also helped them burn off some energy!

They easily could go from continent to content, but they had to be mindful not to fall in the water.

2. Boats

Next to the Verdenskort was a little harbor of boats. These boats were big enough for one to two people and allowed visitors to experience the open seas / small section of the lake that was next to the world map. You could paddle your way to Australia or visit Asia on your short sea voyage!

3. Minigolf

Another place that my boys wanted to try was the minigolf course at Verdenskortet. For a small extra fee, you can get a ball and golf club inside the main building. The boys made a very clever plan that would require one of them winning the game in order to get an ice cream reward at the end.

Too bad for them that their mom loves a challenge and had to dominate in our friendly game! Truth be told that I just got lucky! ๐Ÿ˜‰ It was a very fun game of 18 holes with many laughs, and yesโ€ฆI did get them ice cream before we left, even though I won the game.

4. Playgrounds at Verdenskortet

When an attraction has a playground, they easily win favors with me! Verdenskortet was even more in my good graces since they had multiple playgrounds.

Wooden Playground

Next to the main building, youโ€™ll find a nice wooden, playground with a climbing tower, slide, and swings. The space around this playground was a large sandpit with sand toys.

Activity Playground with Olden-Day Toys

Across from the wooden playground was the activity playground. Here children could use a bit more motion with different jumping or spinning areas.

They even had a fenced-in area with old-fashioned toys that required a lot of balance! My boys were up for the challenge!

ย

Naturlegeplads / Obstacle Course

Towards the back of the grounds, you can find the wooden obstacle course. This is geared more towards smaller children, since the obstacles are closer to the other obstacles and to the ground. Still my boys thought it was fun to see how fast they could complete the course!ย

Hopping Pillows and Puzzles

One playground item that is always a favorite with my kids is the hopping pillow. Verdenskortet has two of these inflatable pillows for children to hop, and they are located to the side of the park closest to the parking lot. There is plenty of room for many children to enjoy hopping, and picnic tables are close by so that parents or grandparents have a place to sit when watching the children.

Also, next to the hopping pillows, you can find some large puzzles. This is an activity that is in the shade and next to the ice cream house. Try and replicate the different animal or flag puzzles from the book to exercise your brain!

5. Labyrinth at Verdenskortet

Near the hopping pillows is the labyrinth or maze at Verdenskortet. I didnโ€™t notice it at first since it was behind a hedge. The maze is made up of many hedges that are quite short, which makes it seem like a good activity for younger children. However, when you start walking down the path, you realize quite quickly that being able to see over the tops of the hedges doesnโ€™t give you an advantage. I got lost quite a few times, but it was a lot of fun to try and race the boys to the end. Needless to say, I lost! ๐Ÿ˜‰

6. Outdoor Games

One area that we found to be a nice change from what you would expect to find at other attractions in Denmark was the outdoor game section. Here, you could play a game of petanque, croquet, horseshoes, tug of war and the Danish game called kongespil (kubb). Kongespil was completely new to me when I moved to Denmark, and I heard that it dates back to the Viking era.

Each game had a sign next to it with instructions in case we didnโ€™t know how to play! The boys and I had a great time playing each of the games, since a few of them were completely new to them!

7. See the Animals at Verdenskortet

If you ever visit Nordjylland or Midtjylland, you will notice that these areas are filled with farms. In fact, when the public first started coming to visit the world map in the late 1800s, the Verdenskortet was still operating as the family farm. It is no surprise that the family that started this unique attraction in Denmark still continues to uphold some of the aspects of its history.

Now, you can find a wide variety of animals at the Verdenskort. These include bunnies, goats, pigs, chickens and other birds.

8. Educational Information

One great thing about Verdenskortet is that you can also learn something not only about the park, but also about Denmark and the rest of the world. Near the water’s edge, you can find the “Videnlund” or “knowledge grove”, where you can read about other places.

Also, a small gazebo has more information on the Verdenskortet and how it was created mostly by one man back in the 1800s. These types of additions make Verdenskortet a great choice for a field trip for younger, school-aged children in Denmark!

What to Eat at Verdenskortet

For those wanting to get something to eat during their time at the Verdenskort, you will be happy to know that they have food options as well as plenty of space to enjoy a home-brought meal.

Verdenskortet Cafeteria

The Verdenskort has plenty of seating if you are looking for a place to dine as a couple or a large group. Order off their menu and get traditional, Danish quick foods like hotdogs, fish fillets and Danish meatballs called frikadeller. The menu also has a variety of drink choices and ice cream.

Picnic and Grill Area at Verdenskortet

If you plan on making it a day for a picnic, you are in luck, since there are many areas throughout the park with picnic tables. On our first trip to Verdenskortet, we were with a large group, so we had reserved a place in their large, outdoor tent. This came in handy since we were there during one of the worst rainstorms of the year. Luckily, it only lasted about an hour.

Grills are also available, but you will want to contact Verdenskortet to get details on this.

Ice Cream House / Ishus

During the busy times of the year, the ice cream house is open and serves a variety of types of ice cream that is sure to please any sweet tooth. This building, however, wasnโ€™t open during our time there, but we were still able to get individually wrapped, ice-cream treats in the main building next to the cafeteria.

Overall Impressions of Verdenskortet in Denmark

Since we were only there for a short time and during a bad rainstorm without our rain gear, we decided that we needed to come back to the Verdenskort for another day to do more activities. We were very glad that we did, since we were able to take our time and have a relaxing, few hours of playtime. Not only was the location of being on the Klejtrup Sรธ (lake) in the middle of farm country peaceful, but it encouraged us to take things slowly as we explored the activities in the park.

We loved the laid-back feel of the whole place, which gave it more of a feeling of a giant park with so much variety when it came to spending time together as a family. The world map was also like nothing I had ever seen before, and we loved how our kids were getting to learn more about geography while having fun exploring โ€œthe worldโ€. We are happy to return for their new addition to the park coming in August of 2021, as well as to check out some more of the park. Overall, I feel that it is a great place for any family to spend a day of play.
