Pokemon Birthday Party Dinnerware

For the dinnerware for the Pokemon birthday party, we wanted to go with items that had the Pokemon figures on them. This is the best way to turn a party into a themed party, in my opinion. I was lucky enough to find some cake plates, paper cups and napkins at Party City. I also bought two plastic cups for my two boys so they would be able to use them on normal days after the party. We have these same cups for many different themes, and they are a hit with my boys.

Party City only had half of their Pokemon-birthday-party section filled with stuff, and when I inquired about it, the worker told me that they couldn’t keep them on the shelves. Geez!! Things were starting to get a bit stressful with this party planning. Since I normally buy dinner plates in the theme of the party, I was still hoping that I could find them in another store.

Unfortunately after looking at all of the other stores: Walmart, Target, etc., I wasn’t able to find anything. Let me stress that! I found NOTHING having to do with Pokémon anywhere with regards to dinnerware, except for a child’s plastic plate, fork and spoon, which seemed too babyish for my soon-to-be 7 year old. 🙁 Major sad face!

I decided to just buy some plain yellow paper (dinner) plates to go with the color scheme instead.

Pokemon Invitations

Before I get too involved with the party details, I need to mention the invitation. This should be the first thing mentioned when talking about a party, since it had to be sent out in time for people to be able to make plans.I did see some at Party City when I was there, but I noticed that they were in English (of course). Since I live in Denmark, and my son’s little friends don’t speak English, I thought it would be better to make my own on the computer.

I normally like the make the invitations anyway, so it isn’t a big deal. For some reason, this is the time when I try to get creative. My boys are getting older, so they may not be so excited about handmade decorations, but they always seem excited to pass out “cool” invitations. I was hoping to make some “cool” invitations that would please any 7 year old boy. The struggle was real!

Since I made invitations for other birthday parties before, I knew I could do it again. I went on to Pinterest to get some ideas, and I was able to find a few free templates. Those were also in English, so I decided to get some ideas from them instead of actually using them.

I used Photoshop to make my invitation and found a nice background picture at Big Background. I dragged this over the entire space of the card and wrote my information on top. I liked one of the templates I found at The Eco Friendly Family but instead of using that design, I decided to copy one of the Peekachoo figures onto my homemade invitation. I then found another design on an invitation I saw on Pinterest and decided to try to find a way to incorporate that. After adding the needed information and text that said how old my son was going to be, I was all done. Here is a picture of the template (in Danish for the most part):

In the white space on the bottom, I typed in large letters how old my son was. I also typed on the lines in the red section the information about the party. Overall, I was really happy with how the invitation to my son’s Pokemon birthday party turned out. I thought I would pull my hair out from trying to figure out how to use Photoshop, since it had been many years since I used it last, but it was fairly painless because of a great tutorial from DIY Krafty Kreations. Her YouTube video was really easy to follow and understand! 🙂

Pokemon Decorations

Pokemon Wall Decorations

For the décor for the Pokemon birthday party, I was lucky enough to find something in the US when I was there for a visit. I bought one of those large tapestries with a picture of the Pokémon characters on it. 

I used the Pokeman wall design as a focal point, and then I tapped Pokeballs on the wall around it that my children had made out of those plastic beads you iron. I had so many of these that I even hung a few by string from the ceiling.

Pokemon Table Decorations

My younger son and I got a bit creative and made two centerpieces for the table out of small cardboard boxes that we were about to put in the recycling bin. We just recycled them in a different way.

We used red construction paper, black construction paper, white copy paper, a quarter (or in Denmark, you could use a 2kr coin) for tracing, a ruler for measuring, a paper cutter and scissors for cutting and glue to make the boxes.

I found a picture of the two main characters from Pokémon online and printed them out and laminated them. I taped these pictures to a straw and put them in the box, which I had stuffed with light blue tissue paper. Voila! I got the idea from surfing the ever-knowing Pinterest…of course. (Also, if you live in Denmark, you will know that the Danish flag is used in decorating for every major event. That is why you will see it with the Pokemon decoration. We live in Denmark and do as the Danes do!) 🙂 

Pokemon Party Games and Activities

When it came to party games, I wanted to be well-prepared to entertain a room full of energetic 7 year olds. This Pokemon birthday party needed to be full of excitement.

Pokemon Bingo

I was glad when I found a PokeBingo game at The Eco Friendly Family. At first, I was having a hard time finding the printable pages, but I noticed a small button that said “download” with the letters PDF in front of it. That lead me right to the file. This file had 7 different bingo boards already made, and there was a template in case you needed to make more. Such a good idea, but we didn’t end up using it, since the weather was really nice for a change. I was still glad to be over-prepared. 

The boys played basketball, soccer, Frisbee and just regular play in the bushes and plants. You’ve got to love the imagination of a child. I also had to love the nice weather. Being that my children are born in the spring and the fall, it is always hard to plan on the weather. The day of the party did not disappoint, which was really nice.

Pokemon Maze/ Word Search / Coloring Pages

I saw a cute Pokemon Maze, Word Search and Word Scrambler sheet on Etsy, but I thought to keep that in mind for another day. My house was filled with a crowd of nine 6 or 7-year-old boys, and I wanted them to be as active as possible…and outside! 🙂 I thought I’d download and print them out, if it rained. I also found some Pokemon Coloring Pages, which some of the boys colored in the last few minutes of the party as they awaited their parents.

Pokemon Scavenger Hunt

One thing that I found that I thought was really great was a Pokemon Scavenger Hunt, which was a lot like Pokemon Go. This had to be the best idea for a Pokemon birthday party activity! I used the images from this site, but shrunk them down, so that they wouldn’t be so easy to see. I cut them out and laminated them, and then, I hide them in my backyard / garden. I really wanted the boys to take some time with this activity.

I also printed out the images extra, extra small on a piece of paper and laminated it. I had a copy for each kid and handed them out with a dry-erase marker. When the boys found the Pokémon (Pokemen?), they would make an X over the picture with their marker.

I was hoping to be a bit more creative and do something a bit more detailed. I originally anticipated that I would put these cards into some sort of handmade, construction paper booklet that also included a pocket full of small Pokeballs that were copied onto paper and laminated. The boys would use sticky tack to attach the Pokeball onto the character from the laminated card when they found them in the garden.

I, of course, forgot to get the sticky tack, so that is when I improvised with the dry-erase markers. Thank god I had enough for all the kids. Seriously! Thanks, God!

The boys LOVED this. I am so glad, since I wasn’t sure how it would go, since it had rained like a typhoon two hours before the party and yet, they were still magically where I had put them before the storm happened. Once again, God, you rock!

(Side note: Now when I have parties, my son’s friends will ask right away, “Are we going to find the Pokemon in the backyard?” Our house is forever known as the “Pokemon house”!)  🙂

Pokemon Food

Pokemon Snacks and Pizza

I didn’t go super crazy with the food for this party like I might normally do. My son is getting older and growing boys like to eat. Imagine having 9 of these boys in your house and hungry. I normally like to stick to healthy foods, but I was thinking more of the line of FAST.

I live in Denmark, and a staple meal for any young boy would be pølsehorn, which are hot dogs wrapped in crescent rolls. We also had snacks like the ever popular popcorn,  pretzels, and chips.

I also made a Pokemon pizza on my son’s actual birthday. It was a big hit with the boys, though not completely round! 🙂

Pokemon Birthday Cake

I’m posting my cake on here, not to impress you, but to catalog the event. Let’s face it. Life doesn’t always turn out the way you plan.

If you look at my other birthday posts, you’d see that my cakes are fairly decent. This was my first official cake in Denmark. I don’t count the Mickey Mouse cake, since that was a completely ALL DANISH cake, which means that I wasn’t trying to do what I normally would do in the US.

This Pokemon birthday cake is a yellow cake with strawberry mousse filling and a butter cream frosting. The frosting really didn’t work out, so I attempted to save it by putting strawberries on the outside of the cake. It was delicious despite its ugliness. I am also happy that my son loved it and that his friends didn’t make any bad comments…at least that I could understand with my poor Danish skills.

Overall, it was a great party. 7 is such a fun age to have the boys over to celebrate, and I am so happy that my son was happy. He loved everything, so I couldn’t have asked for more.
